It seems the whole world is on TikTok. And why not? It’s a fantastic outlet for people who enjoy dancing, lip-synching, and comedy improv. You can really let your personality shine. But what about your personal information?
Like most social media apps, the way TikTok collects user information is always scrutinized. What does TikTok know about you? What does the company do with the information itself? And can TikTok record you without you knowing?
In 2018, TikTok was fined $5.7 million for illegally collecting the names, images, locations and addresses of children aged 13 or younger.
The company knew that many young people were using the app, but they did not seek permission from parents or guardians to collect all of this data.
The policy says they only collect usernames, passwords, and birthdates. However, even though the news of this fine has caused some discomfort among parents, the app is gaining popularity every day.
Is TikTok recording you without your knowledge?
Answering this question is not as simple as it seems. First of all, no one really knows what apps are doing when you give them permission to access all your data.
This is also the case with TikTok. There are rumors that TikTok is a Chinese spy app, but there is no evidence to support this claim. When you sign up for TikTok, you need to give it access to your microphone and camera.
Once done, theoretically, TikTok can access it at any time and register you without your knowledge. And it’s the same with all apps that ask for these permissions, including Instagram and WhatsApp.
What does TikTok do with your information?
When it comes to apps like TikTok, it’s not so much about what information they can get from you, but what they do with it. On the official TikTok website, they have a list of the ways they use your information. It’s probably best to check it out before signing up.
That way, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into. But even if it’s too late and you’re already lip-syncing every day, you can still keep up to date. TikTok uses your data to:
- Do data analysis, create statistics and improve their services.
- Personalization of content.
- To send you promotional material from them directly, as well as from third parties.
- To inform their algorithms and know your interests.
- To detect abusive behavior or illegal activity.
These are just examples of how TikTok uses your data. Some of them make sense, while others are a bit confusing. TikTok claims that they do not sell their users’ personal information to third parties. But they do share some personal data with their business partners.
What type of information does TikTok collect?
Now that you know what TikTok does with your information, it’s natural to wonder what exactly they have access to. Some of these are expected, such as age, username, password, location, and language.
And you probably know that they own everything you create on the app, all your user content. They will have your payment information, as well as your social media and phone contacts. Simply put, TikTok will know everything about your phone.
The pattern, phone carrier, time zone, your typing pattern, etc. They can read all user messages on the platform. And if you sign in with another social media platform, they will also collect your information from those services.
Is TikTok safe?
No one knows what happens to your data once you post it to any app, including TikTok. Perhaps it’s a good idea to suspect foul play by TikTok, given the legal issues they’ve had.
But it’s not like other social media apps are much better. If you want to be sure that TikTok doesn’t register you without your knowledge, don’t install it on your phone.
