When creating an account on most dating apps, you need to enter your phone number. This usually happens because you receive a specific code as a text message. In turn, apps use this code to verify and activate your account.
But what if you’re halfway through your Hinge account and can’t verify it with the code anymore? It doesn’t work and you get upset. This article offers some solutions that you can try to fix the problem.
Why is my verification code not working?
You cannot start using Hinge unless you activate and verify your account. To do this, enter the validation code you receive on your phone. But if you don’t receive the code or it doesn’t work when you enter it, don’t worry. Here are some things you can do.
1. Incorrect phone number
Before you do anything else, make sure you’ve entered the correct phone number. Maybe you entered the wrong combination of numbers or entered your old phone number. Try again and make sure you enter the phone number you’re currently using that belongs to the phone you installed Hinge on. You should also double-check the country code to make sure you typed the correct one.
2. You’re not using the default messaging app
You will receive the validation code as an SMS. Check your default messaging app for new messages. If there are no unread texts, you might want to check for app updates – new messages may appear after the update.
3. You didn’t update the hinge
You should also make sure that you are using the updated version of the Hinge app. If there are new updates pending and you haven’t installed them, the app may start bugging. Check Google Play or App Store for updates, then try your code again.
4. You have already tried several times
If you received the code and it doesn’t work, try signing up again to receive another code. If you tried multiple times, you might get locked out of the app. This means you are locked out for the next 24 hours. You cannot enter the code before the end of this period. Hinge can’t unlock the app manually, so there’s no need to contact customer service for help. After 24 hours, you can try again.
5. You waited too long
Sometimes these shortcodes can expire. You should probably grab it when you receive it. If you wait too long, you may have to re-register and wait for a new code.
6. Restart your phone and the app
If there is a problem with the connection or the app itself, restarting your phone can help. Also, you can delete the app from your device and then install it again. Repeat the registration process and see if the code works now.
7. Your email is blocked
Contact your mobile operator to make sure you can receive SMS Short Code type messages. Companies use these texts to send codes and PINs. If you do not receive the message with your Hinge code, this may be the reason. Your mobile operator may be able to disable message blocking, which will allow Hinge to send you the PIN.
This one is actually a pretty common problem. Internet users complain that some mobile operators automatically block this type of message. Therefore, they encounter problems every time they have to validate their phone number in a new application.
You can check if your carrier supports SMS short codes online. If you don’t see your provider on this list, you can contact their help center and check if they support this type of messaging.
If you received the code, but it doesn’t work, here’s what you can try:
- Open the SMS with the code.
- In the type field, enter the word HELP and press Submit.
- This resets the operator linked to your phone number.
- If you receive a text reply, it means that short code messages have been activated for your phone number. Now try entering the hinge code again and see if it works.
If that doesn’t work, you can try sending another shortcode, just to make sure this feature is disabled for your phone number. If you don’t get a response, your wireless service provider probably doesn’t support short code messaging. In this case, you can only contact your mobile operator and ask them to activate short codes for your number.
