How to share a post to your story on Instagram

Posted on

Sharing posts to your Instagram story is a walk in the park. You can do this with your own posts, your friends’ posts, and posts from any public profile.

The principle is the same whatever the source. Therefore, the article will not include separate explanations for your posts, public posts, etc. However, we are going to give you a trick to do it through the desktop.

Sharing posts on Instagram Story

Step 1

Launch the Instagram app and navigate to the post you want to share in your story. Use the magnifying glass icon to search for friends or public posts. Or tap your profile icon to go to your posts and find the image you want to use.

Of course, you can also do this from your feed.

2nd step

Once you find the post you like, tap the paper airplane icon below the image. Remember that this action applies regardless of the destination of the publication.

Tap “Add a post to your story” and use the built-in tools to customize the image or add a cool message.

Step 3

Tap the “Send to” button at the bottom right of the screen for more sharing options.

When you tap Your Story, a pop-up menu lets you automatically share the story on Facebook. If you are doing this for marketing purposes, it is beneficial to keep the option enabled. The post should have a bigger reach and you don’t need to create separate stories for the two social networks.

Finally, click the Share button next to Your Story, and you’re good to go.

IMPORTANT Notes

You can change the viewing permissions of the post you are sharing. This option is available after tapping “Add a post to your story” – it’s the Close Friends icon at the bottom of the screen. And it also appears in the Share window. What’s nice is that you can create an exclusive list of friends who can see shared posts.

By tapping the paper airplane icon, you can also share the post with your friends as a direct message. You can perform both actions one after the other; tap the Share button next to your friend’s nickname and tap Done to finish.

If you share a post from your friend or from a public profile, Instagram automatically credits the image. This is why it is advisable to keep Instagram posts and profile public if you are using it for commercial or marketing purposes.

However, if you repost, you can only do so if the user has allowed this type of sharing.

Can you share Instagram videos with your story?

Yes, you can, and the same steps apply as previously described. Of course, the important thing is that the video is public and sharing is allowed. And you also have the option to embellish the clip with doodle, custom text, etc.

How to share a post on Instagram Story via desktop

It’s no secret that Instagram limits desktop usability. But there is a neat workaround that lets you share certain posts.

However, “Add a post to your story” is not available when clicking on the paper airplane icon via the desktop version. But there is a way to overcome this. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1

Launch Chrome, log into your Instagram account and right-click anywhere on the screen. Select Inspect, and you’ll see a bunch of code on the left side of the screen. No worries, you don’t need to figure it out.

2nd step

Click on the three vertical dots in the console and switch the “Dock Side” orientation down to get more screen real estate. Now click on the smartphone icon in the upper left corner of the console.

Thereupon, go to the upper section of the window and click on the first drop-down menu on the left. Select the type of smartphone you are using and voila, you get Instagram mobile on desktop.

Step 3

As said, clicking on the paper airplane icon does not allow you to share a post directly in the Story. The workaround is to take a screenshot of the post, save it to your computer, and then repost it manually.

Step 4

Once you have the image, refresh the Instagram page, click on Your Story and select the image from your computer. You can add doodles, custom text, and other customizations. Select “Add a post to your story” to finish, and that’s it.

Important Considerations

Don’t forget to tag or credit the original creator of the post. Limitations of this method include the number of actions you need to perform and the fact that you cannot re-share videos. Other than that, it’s pretty handy.

Sharing is caring

If you remember, sharing posts on your Story used to be a pain until Instagram decided to include the feature. At this point, your imagination is your only limit, and it’s one of the easiest ways to draw attention to your old posts.
