How to share your Instagram posts with your story

Posted on

Have you thought about doing a little self-promotion on Instagram? These days it’s incredibly easy. All you have to do is share your Instagram posts to your story. Interestingly enough, Instagram was only originally testing the feature, and a select group of users were able to use it. But since the feature was so well received, it was added to everyone’s Instagram feed. If you want to learn how to share your IG posts to your story, and some additional tips and tricks, keep reading.

The option to reshare posts in stories is now an essential feature on Instagram. All you need is the Instagram app for Android or iOS, depending on which device you’re using. Make sure to use the links provided to update the app to the latest version.

What’s great about this feature is that now the original poster is properly credited. Previously, you could only see the poster’s IG username near the bottom of the post, but now the link in your story is interactive.

This means that anyone who views your story and clicks the embedded link is redirected to the original post by the person who first uploaded it. Why is this important? Well, imagine creating great content, whatever it is (sharp landscape image, a funny joke or even a song) and not being credited for it.

I don’t know about you, but I get pretty mad when someone steals my jokes and acts like they made them up first. The same can apply to any other type of content on Instagram. Using other people’s content is only fair if you credit the author (or poster).

Of course, if you want to share your posts, it’s pretty obvious who the poster was.

Sharing Instagram posts to stories

There’s just one thing you need to know before sharing your Instagram posts in your story. To freely share posts and allow others to share your posts, make sure your profile settings allow it. Here’s how to enable story sharing:

  1. Login to Instagram.
  2. Go to your profile (bottom right of the screen).
  3. Tap the hamburger menu and select Settings near the bottom of your screen.
  4. Next, tap on Privacy.
  5. Next, tap on History.
  6. Scroll down and make sure Allow Sharing to Stories is enabled.
    allow sharing

After these steps, you can finally share your post in your story on Instagram:

  1. Start Instagram on your device.
  2. Go to your profile and enter a message you want to share.
  3. Tap the Share option (looks like a folded paper airplane).
    post share
  4. Tap Add post to your story.
add an article to the story
  5. Feel free to edit the message if you wish; this is optional. Tap Send To and tap Share next to Your Story.

While this is a guide to sharing your posts on your Instagram story, note that you can do the same with other people’s posts. Just go to their profile, choose a post they posted, and follow the same steps as before.

If the share button under their posts appears gray and you can’t select it, that means the Instagram user you’re trying to re-share has blocked this option.

Now you know how to share anyone’s post on Instagram to your story. As we said, free to modify the posts as you wish. You can add all kinds of effects, text, filters; you have the same options as when posting a regular Instagram story.

We leave that part up to you and your creativity. If you share other people’s posts, don’t worry, they’ll be credited and you probably won’t mind. In case they mind people reposting their stuff, they can easily disable this feature.
